December 2011

“Porta da Mar” or the “door from the sea”) and time and the weather had caused the statues of the prophets to lose much of their splendour hence the reason why THUN, as part of the THUN for Art in Italy project, decided to fund the artistic restoration of the prophet statues. It was a gesture of affection for the Basilica, as the lagoon city’s architectural masterpiece, which is envied worldwide but which is perhaps the treasure that is most at risk from the ravages of time.

Procuratoria council of San Marco For THUN - a leading ceramics company based in Alto-Adige which manufactures ceramics, pottery gifts and accessories for the home and is famous for its iconic “Original Angelo of Bolzano” - entering the world of “cultural patrons”, was a new experience. Yet the link between art and THUN has existed for over 60 years, ever since Counts Otmar and Lene Thun started up their “Thun Artistic Ceramics” business (as it was then called) in the basement of a castle in Bolzano, basing all their activities on their love of art and creativity. The company has always preserved its artistic vocation, particularly for ceramic products shaped entirely by hand, and follows the teaching and life philosophy of its founder. After the inauguration ceremony in St. Mark’s Square, the celebrations continued in the Sala del Ridotto at the Hotel Monaco & Gran Canal with a gala dinner for guests and journalists2008 by Peter Thun in memory of the Countess, all over the world the foundation is committed to bringing a smile to disadvantaged children and adults through clay-modelling, which, project after project, has demonstrated its therapeutic value. For the occasion, four unique models of the prophets, made by the ceramic artist Amin, were put up for auction. Ezio Greggio was an exceptional auctioneer and contributed to the fund-raising by bringing along a Tapir which went to a smiling president of the Venice province employers association.
