December 2011 - RESTORATION WORK COMPLETED OF THE SEVEN FIREPLACES IN THE DOGE’S APARTMENT IN THE DOGE’S PALACE

December 2011

“What does Venice mean for you? Venice has given me a lot and so it represents a good chapter of my life. This is where the idea and the desire cam from to get involved and do something concrete. Without the treasures of this splendid city there would be no tourism or economy and many small businesses would not exist. Trying to improve it is a duty and an honour”.

This was how Luciano Marsilli introduced himself – Giovanna Zabotti and Enrico Bressan of Fondaco say – the result of experience, of work and the right awareness of the entrepreneur who knows they are operating in a region that is rich with resources. The desire to question oneself emerges, in order to find new stimuli and gain ideas from the city’s artistic and historical heritage. The restoration of the seven fireplaces in the Doge’s apartment was a project that has been taken on with great enthusiasm by Marsilli – Bressan continues – as it is near to his professional business. The fireplace is seen not only as an object for heating but also as a “kitchen”; leading to research at the Correr Library and the Marciana Library of the notions and meanings of these seven works of art that were created by the Lombardo brothers at the start of the 16th century. The grand bas-reliefs that decorate all the fireplaces – says Zabotti – illustrate a history of great prestige and narrate stories of interesting people and things. We have identified the Doges that created and then over time enriched this area of the Doges’ Palace, the characters, the objects and the spices carved into the marble and the food trade of that period. From here – continues Zabotti – we introduced some initiatives that linked the Marsilli family restaurants with the restoration. Over the three years suggestions have been made for typical old-fashioned dishes, there have been shifts in the history of Venetian cooking, we have organised evenings dedicated to elaboration with industry experts and communication initiatives devoted to centralising the relationship between business and cultural heritage. It’s a language that has given business people the chance to find new opportunities for bolstering their own business. From a human and professional perspective – conclude Bressan and Zabotti – it has been a great experience which has taught us a lot, starting with the enthusiasm and spirit with which the Marsilli family has ventured along this path, calling the people closest in order to experience together the emotion of placing your signature on a piece of history of Venice. As of today the Marsilli family is by right a part of the history of this city! Thank you!
